Vehicle · while you still have one
The cheapest key you will ever buy is the second one.
Made while you still have the first, a spare is a routine job. Made after you lose it, the same key becomes a call-out, a code lookup and a programming session.
Why the price gap is so wide
With a working key in hand, the cut is copied directly and the chip is enrolled alongside keys the car already trusts. Short job, no diagnosis.
With no key at all, the car has to be opened, the code obtained or the lock read, the key cut from scratch, and the immobilizer taught a key it has never seen.
Often on the roadside. Often at an unsociable hour, because that is when people find out.
Same piece of metal. Entirely different job.
Two keys is a safety margin
One key is a single point of failure. The chip fails, the fob drowns, the blade snaps in the ignition, somebody drives to Tahoe with it in their pocket.
With a spare, every one of those is an inconvenience instead of a tow.
What to bring
- The working key.
- The car. Programming happens at the vehicle.
- Photo ID and proof the car is yours.
We will tell you on the phone whether your car needs a programming session at all. Some older cars take a plain mechanical copy, and if yours is one you should pay for a plain mechanical copy.
