Home
Your door, opened and then made right.
Getting you back in is twenty minutes of work. The more useful conversation is the one after: whether the lock that just failed you was ever any good.
What we do on homes
Now
House or apartment lockout
Front doors, back doors, garages, mailboxes. Opened without damage. We tell you before we do anything that is not reversible.
After a move
Rekeying
Same locks, new key. The previous tenant's keys, the agent's keys and the contractor's keys all stop working.
Keyless
Smart and keypad locks
Codes and phones instead of keys. Supplied and fitted, or fitted if you bought your own once we have checked it suits your door.
The California number worth knowing
California Civil Code section 1941.3 requires a landlord to fit a deadbolt on a rental's main entry with a throw of at least thirteen-sixteenths of an inch, plus working locks on windows and a locking mechanism on other exterior doors.
Thirteen-sixteenths. Not one inch. The one-inch figure is repeated everywhere and it is wrong as a statement of state law.
It is right in several cities on this Peninsula, because they adopted stricter codes of their own. The city pages say which rule applies where you are.
There is also a carve-out people miss. The state deadbolt duty does not apply to a building designated as a historical structure. In San Francisco, with hundreds of landmarked buildings, that is not hypothetical.
California Civil Code §1941.3, read via a secondary publisher. The State's own site was unreachable at the time of writing, so check the official text before relying on the wording.
