A code instead of a key. If your door can take one.
Most smart locks are a deadbolt with a motor and a radio. Whether one fits your door comes down to three measurements, and it is worth checking before you buy.
What a smart lock actually gives you
- No key to lose, copy or hand back. You change a code instead of changing a lock.
- A separate code per person. Cleaner, dog walker, guest. Delete one and the rest keep working.
- A record of who opened the door and when. On models that log it.
- Remote unlocking, on models with Wi-Fi or a bridge.
And what it does not give you
A smart lock is not stronger than a normal deadbolt. The bolt, the strike and the frame are what resist force, and those are the same parts.
If somebody can kick your frame in today, a keypad changes nothing. The strike plate does.
The three measurements
Backset is the edge of the door to the center of the hole. Door thickness matters because many smart locks stop at 1¾ or 2 inches, and old doors are often thicker. Bore size is the diameter of the hole itself.
Send a photo of the door edge and the existing lock on WhatsApp and we will tell you what will fit before you spend anything.
Words you will hear
Before you choose one
Keep a mechanical key
Pick a model with a real keyway, or keep a key for the back door. Batteries die at bad times, and a lock with no mechanical override turns a dead battery into a service call.
Who is on the lease
Renting? Ask the landlord before changing the hardware. A retrofit model that sits over the inside of the existing deadbolt usually solves this: nothing outside changes and the original key still works.
Buildings and common doors
A smart lock on your own apartment door is your business. The lobby door is the building's, and that is an access-control conversation rather than a lock purchase. See access control.
